Cleared for Takeoff: New FAA Regulations Pave the Way for Realtors® to Use Unmanned Aircraft for Aerial Photography
This week, the Federal Aviation Administration released new operational rules for the use of small commercial drones. The new regulations take effect in late August 2016 and will create new opportunities for drone use in real estate.
Top 8 rules that you need to know before you fly:
- Drones must stay below 400 feet
- Commercial Drones must weigh LESS than 55 pounds.
- Drones must stay within the sight of the operator (or an observer who is in communication of the operator).
- Pilots must be at least 16 years old
- Certification requires pilots to pass an aeronautical test every 2 years.
- Pilots can only operate drones during daylight hours.
- Evening operations will be allowed if the aircraft carries lights visible for 3 miles.
- The top flight speed for drones is 100 miles per hour.
