Effective July 1, 2017, Virginia Home Inspectors are required by law to be licensed.

You can search license look up by city or zip code at dpor.virginia.gov/LicenseLookup/. Select “Advanced License Search,” check the box for “Board for Asbestos, Lead, and Home Inspectors” then select “Certified Home Inspector” from the License Type drop down.

For a comprehensive list of resources, visit VirginiaREALTORS.org/for-members/home-inspectors-deadline/.

To inspect new residential structures, license holders will have to obtain the New Residential Structure (NRS) specialty designation in addition to the newly required license. This designation will appear on the inspector’s license during license lookup. New residential structures include residential properties for which the first conveyance of record title to a purchaser has not occurred or the purchaser has not taken possession, whichever occurs later.

If you have any questions, please contact the Asbestos, Lead, and Home Inspector Board at 804.367.8595.
